SOPHOMORES

  • As you watch the documentary, please think about issues that YOU may consider writing to YOUR congressman about.
  • Do some RESEARCH about the issue that interests you most and is important for you to act on NOW!  Using evidence will make your call to action more urgent and effective!  Maybe the videos inspired you OR if you watch the news there is a lot!  Here are some issues:
    • COVID-19 issues
      • Federal vs State level responses
      • Testing availability and cost
      • Healthcare cost
      • PPE(Personal Protective Equipment)Shortages
      • Health and Safety of frontline workers - Medical (nurses, doctors, pharmacists, etc), First Responders(police, firemen, paramedics, etc) Grocers(cashiers, baggers, delivery, stock, etc) Public Transportation workers, Maintenance cleaning ladies and janitors) and other ESSENTIAL WORKERS who HAVE HAD to go to work
      • Unemployment benefits
      • Food Banks - free lunches at schools over the summer?
      • Issues with banks paying loans
      • Social Distancing and Mask Rules, Re-Opening Timeline (Wisconsin Stay at home orders overturned by Supreme Court)
      • Schooling in the fall  ...now concerns of child health and the new syndrome, universities going online for the fall
      • Protests (Armed protesters in Michigan)
      • Mixed messaging from Government leaders and Medical Experts
      • Mental Health issues
      • International issues - WHO, reporting, travel, aid to those at risk in refugee camps, etc
    • Gun violence - (shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia March for Our Lives)
    • Racism/Discrimination (LGBTQ foster families)
    • 2020 Election - Safety concerns, mail-in voting, voting registration, delayed citizen applications
    • Corruption in D.C. - Senator sell off stocks before crash, Michael Flynn
    • Environment - pollution decrease!?
    • High speed internet access for all
    • Juvenile detention
  • Draft a "FORMAL" letter "To Whom It May Concern" -  Share this letter with me by May 19th!  After you send me a draft of your letter I will help you determine WHICH GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL AT WHICH LEVEL you should send the letter to - Writing /printing an actual letter, believe it or not, has a better chance to get a response over a Email!
  • If you have another idea LMK!? ...this could include:
    • recording a Soapbox speech about the issue to inform other students about some sort of injustice...see MIKVA PROJECT SOAPBOX CHALLENGE - another link for EXAMPLES broadcast on CSPAN
    • volunteering and writing a reflection of the work you did and people you met
    • collecting and donating items or $  for a cause and writing a reflection of the work you did
    • making PPE/masks or care baskets for first responders and donating and writing a reflection of the work you did
    • becoming involved with a political campaign or some government initiative through the school board, township, or city, state, national level and writing a reflection of the work you did

SENIORS ONLY - I hope the videos above were inspirational...Rather than write a letter to your congressman, I would like for you to do the following:

    • WATCH this video for instructions: how to register to vote video
